Former First Lady Michelle Obama celebrated her 56th birthday anniversary on Friday, January 17. However, President Donald Trump spoilt Obama’s special day when he attacked the former FLOTUS’ School Nutrition Guidelines on her birthday.
President Donald Trump’s administration said on Friday that it will be rolling back Michelle Obama’s school breakfast and lunch nutrition guidelines, Slate reported. The announcement coincided with the former FLOTUS celebrating her 56th birthday anniversary.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the proposed new rules will give local school and food service operators more flexibility to determine nutritional standards for their students “because they know their children best.” The proposed rules will also address food wastage while giving schools the choose meals that will be appetizing to the students.
“Schools and school districts continue to tell us that there is still too much food waste and that more common-sense flexibility is needed to provide students nutritious and appetizing meals,” USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a statement. “We listened and now we’re getting to work.”
“Our proposed changes empower schools to give their very best to our children nationwide and have the potential to benefit nearly 100,000 schools and institutions that feed 30 million children each school day through USDA’s school meal programs,” Perdue added.
However, nutrition advocates say the proposal is basically a step back from the gains made by Michelle Obama’s Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Many fear that schools will start serving unhealthy food to students once the proposed rules take into effect.
“School kids now could eat pizza, hamburgers, french fries and cookies for lunch every day in place of the healthier, balanced school lunch now offered,” Center for Science in the Public Interest deputy director of legislative affairs Colin Schwartz said, according to Bloomberg.
Netizens were not pleased with Donald Trump’s move especially since he timed the announcement on Michelle Obama’s birthday. Her fans were quick to condemn the president on social media. “The whole world already knows Donald Trump is petty-minded and spiteful,” someone posted on Twitter, according to Express.
“Trump will never have the respect and prestige that Michelle and Barack Obama enjoy in the whole world!” another Twitter user posted a message voicing support for the former First Couple. “Trump is a crazy man!”
But the Obamas did not seem affected by Trump administration’s move. In fact, Barack Obama showed his love for his wife on social media. The former president posted four pictures of himself and Michelle holding hands, one picture shows him kissing her checks, another shows the former POTUS hugging his wife and the fourth shows him embracing her.
“In every scene, you are my star, Michelle Obama!” Barack Obama captioned his post. “Happy birthday, baby!”
