In a shocking case of political violence, 57-year-old Vance Boelter has been charged with federal and state murder counts after allegedly assassinating Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. Authorities say Boelter’s attacks were part of a broader plan to kill multiple Democratic lawmakers, using disguises, fake police gear, and a target list found in his vehicle and home.
Boelter visited at least four legislators’ residences wearing a police-style vest and mask, knocking on doors under the guise of law enforcement. His SUV had police-style lights and a fake “POLICE” plate. At around 3:35 a.m., officers witnessed Boelter shoot Mark Hortman at his Brooklyn Park home. Melissa was found dead inside.
A large-scale manhunt led to Boelter’s arrest on Sunday. Authorities found multiple rifles, handguns, a fake badge, and detailed notes naming over 45 Democratic officials and abortion rights advocates. One entry mentioned surveillance on the Hortmans’ residence, including family details and entry points.
Boelter had sent a chilling text to his family hours after the killings, saying, “Dad went to war last night.” A subsequent search of his wife’s car revealed more weapons, cash, and passports. Authorities are investigating her involvement.
The attack occurred during a weekend of heightened political tensions, with anti-Trump protests nationwide. FBI documents describe the assault as a “planned campaign of stalking and violence.” Boelter, who confessed in a letter to the FBI, is due in court again on June 27 and may face the death penalty.
